  • February 4-12: Odyssey Productions presents THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE by Robert Clinton. "The Mail Order Bride" belongs to a long tradition of plays which revolve around the telling of stories. In this play, Harold English is our storyteller, a conjurer who reveals the truth through the illusion. Humor covers the pain, love informs all, loss is always nearby, and happy endings don't come easily in true stories. We learn a lot about the courage it took to build upon this harsh, unfriendly land, and the courage it takes to make love stay in a world that is unkind too often. About the courage it takes to face truth knowing its ability to hurt and destroy or heal and set free. Stories have almost magical powers. They are how we understand ourselves a little better. The storyteller has a perspective no one else has found, and offers the story as a gift that amuses, entertains heals, teaches, reveals and scolds. Stories take us to new places and we grow from the journey. THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE is, finally, about family. It shows us how families can grow, flourish, fail, betray one another, offer comfort and strength. While the Teeters are not every family, their story is one we all can share, and their truths, even in the pleasant disguise of the theatre's illusions, are ones we all can cherish. • February: Ed Pas
Saskatoon Artist working in acrylic on wood (carved and painted)
Artist statement - The ongoing theme of my work involves encounters with metaphysical beings in metaphysical landscapes. The work comes from a meditational approach where the images take form of their own volition during drawing sessions. In these sessions I enter a trance-like state similar to the soul journeys experienced by shamans. The experience is of a secret meeting in the vague half-shadow area characterized by the penumbra.* My process is about depicting these meetings and mapping the territory of this place through the creation of evocative images. The beings who show themselves in my work are travelers, guardians, spirit animals and others who cross my path. When they appear, the beings become part of a very personal iconography which I have developed over a number of years. This iconography includes recurring images of water, celestial bodies, ancient buildings and other objects, artifacts, and manifestations of nature. Each image records a glimpse of a meeting, an experience, or perhaps a portrait of one of the inhabitants of the penumbral place. The subjects are precise yet vague, seem simultaneously ancient and futuristic, and can be interpreted on multiple levels. I have been fascinated with the medieval concept that art should be more than simply a depiction of the outside world as we see and feel it with our five senses that the true reality exists beyond the mundane. My work to date has been an attempt to create sacred objects which we can enjoy as part of our daily lives--objects which can help to transform our surroundings into areas of sacredness and contemplation.
---------- * penumbra: the partly lighted area surrounding the complete shadow of a body, as the moon, in full eclipse --- the less dark region surrounding the dark central area of a sunspot --- a vague, indefinite, or borderline area

    Ascensions
    by Karen Skoronski
    curated by Ulrike Veith
Skoronski’s material is old wall paper that she has salvaged from empty farm houses in Saskatchewan. With this wallpaper she constructs 2-dimensional assemblages. Rather than reconstructing the experience of the settlers who lived with the wall paper, Skoronski uses the material in a spiritual manner. She takes the encrusted wall paper layers, separates them and re-layers them in new configurations. She is guided by her subconscious as much as aesthetics in her creative process, to transform the trapped energies into new abstractions, icons and metaphors.
“The images will reflect the way I transform original wallpaper designs. Some designs will read as iconography, articulating a state of mind, while other patterns will read as language. The transmuted old fragments balance abstraction and representation, spontaneity with time, inner space with outer space, visual metaphors and conceptual space.”
    Skoronski

  • February 18 - March 26, 2000
    Winter Festival: Juried Art Show
    Local Showcase Exhibition
Juror: Gilles Hebert, Director, Mendel Art Gallery

Opening Reception: Friday, Feb 18 from 8:00-10:00pm
    Talk/Tour: Saturday, Feb 19 - 1:00pm

The Winter Festival Juried Art Show is a showcase for local and regional artists and fulfills a central role in the region, as it provides the only professionally juried show that serves the area. The Winter Festival Juried Art Show is the only juried exhibition in the province that displays all the works entered for a one week period. The show is an important venue for new and emerging artists in the community and allows the gallery to feature these artists and to provide them with feedback on their work. The format includes group and individual critiques. Artists are making intensive use of this opportunity. The general public is in high attendance at this show. In just one week, 2000 people visit the gallery and are engaged and challenged by a wide range of art practices.

    Winter Festival Juror…

This year’s juror is Gilles Hebert, Director of The Mendel Art Gallery. Before moving to Saskatoon in 1998, Hebert was executive director of the St. Norbert Art & Cultural Centre, a young multi-disciplinary residency-based arts organization housed in a former Trappist Mon-astery just outside of Winnipeg. Among other projects, he co-organized a national exhibition of Aganetha Dyck’s work. Hebert has been involved with the Winnipeg Art Gallery both in curatorial and administrative capacities, with the National Film Board of Canada, the Winnipeg Film Group, as well as collaborating with the curator of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris on a retrospective of Canadian films.

For entry forms and/or more information on the Winter Festival Juried Art Show please contact The Little Gallery at 763-7080
