CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTRE

Are you: unemployed? Looking for help in choosing a career? Seeking to re-enter the workforce? Wishing to upgrade your skills in order to find a new career? Are you: hampered in seeking employment due to an addiction or lacking personal skills? Wondering where to turn for help at a price you can afford? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, drop into the Prince Albert Career Development Centre across from City Hall on 11th Street East. More than an Employment Agency, the Career Development Centre offers all of its resources, free of charge, to any person who wishes to use them. Fully trained staff are on hand to provide vocational and employment counselling services and will help you make use of the many resources available there.

The centre provides up-to-date job postings for employment in Prince Albert and surrounding areas as well as the employment sections of various Canadian daily newspapers. It has information on colleges, universities, technical institutes and the Canadian Armed Forces. Statistics and information on market trends and job futures, application forms for funding and scholarships. At the Career Development Centre, a job search quiz will evaluate your skills, you can learn effective resume and letter writing, interview skills and how to develop job search plans. If your typing is a little rusty or perhaps you would like to learn, the centre has office equipment available for its clients, including computers. There are tutorials available for typing, as well as for all the latest software programs including WordPerfect, MS Word and Lotus 1-2-3.

The Career Development Centre has audiovisual information covering many areas from employment searches to personal development and addictions. Printed material on a variety of job related topics is on hand and volunteer opportunities are posted. All of these services are open to everyone and have been available for more than 8 years. In Prince Albert, the hope of finding better education and employment opportunities has always drawn a growing number of people to the city from smaller communities. In 1986 it was felt that an agency to help young people make wise vocational and career choices was needed and the Youth Employment Services opened its doors in March of that year. Partially funded by the Employment and Immigration Outreach program, it was geared to the younger generation. After four years of operation, a case load review revealed that 40% of the clients using the services were over 25 years of age. To better reflect the scope and services offered, the agency was then renamed the Career Development Centre. In 1991, additional funding was received to provide employment-related services to Unemployment Insurance recipients to help them become re-employed as quickly as possible.

Over the years, the centre has also been involved in projects concerning inmates, youth and the special needs of women. Today, more than ever, when finding employment or choosing a career is becoming increasingly difficult, isn't it great to know that the Career Development Centre is always ready to help put you to work!

SAMUEL MCLEOD BUSINESS AWARDS

Prince Albert suffered misfortune when the railways did not arrive and shattered the dreams of rapid growth and expansion; misadventure and mismanagement with the La Colle Falls fiasco, a financial burden carried for more than 50 years. During that bleak financial period, one man remained a staunch supporter of the community. His belief in the advantages and investment opportunities in Prince Albert led him to seek financial aid as well as using his own resources to keep the community afloat. Samuel McLeod made his fortune in Prince Albert. His vision, drive and determination coupled with his commitment to the community are now the driving force behind a tribute to local business that carries his name. Each year, the success stories of many local businesses are recognized in Product Development, Job Creation, New Business, Community Involvement, Marketing, Investment, Service Industry and Business of the Year. The Samuel McLeod Awards Dinner, Wednesday, APRIL 20, Convention Centre. For information & tickets call: Anne Broda 953-4384.
