CARLTON COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL

(For more articles on Carlton C. H. S. click HERE)

Education is a mirror that reflects the achievements of a community, of a society and of a nation. In Canada, the public school system stuttered to a start in the 1840s in the East and spread slowly westward. One-room schools served many communities well into the 1960s, especially in the prairie provinces where lack of transportation made it difficult for rural children to travel to school. Each community built the best school they could afford, furnished it, hired a teacher and bought supplies.

In Western Canada, plans and material for a complete rural school could even be ordered from the T. Eaton catalogue. School attendance, especially at the higher levels, although often compulsory, was difficult to enforce in farming communities, not only during planting and harvesting season but also when help was needed to cope with the daily chores. The cold prairie winters often resulted in the school closing, sometimes for the entire season.

Prince Albert early recognized the importance of education and in the 1880s, was considered the hub of higher learning for all the North West Territories. A long history of community involvement and co-operation in education reached its peak in 1970 when the P.A. School District #3, the P.A. Rural School Unit #56 and the P.A. Catholic School District #6 signed an agreement to construct a Comprehensive High School, the largest in Saskatchewan.

A new Comprehensive High School Board was formed with representatives from each of the founding bodies. Construction started in 1971 and while the school term began on schedule in September of 1975, the official opening ceremonies were held in December of that year. In the spirit of participation, the students themselves decided upon the historic name Carlton. The school's theme "Dedicated to Excellence" is reflected in the many facilities and the varied curriculum.

Prince Albert's first indoor swimming pool was integrated into the design of the school. A forty acre park with an all weather track, football field, ball diamonds, tennis courts and soccer pitches are used by the school and the city. Inside, a lecture theatre accommodates up to 231 students.

A well-equipped Resource Centre or library supplies computers for quick access to books and other learning materials. There are three gymnasiums and a weight room for exercising.

The Carlton Cafetorium seats more than 900 people and is an ideal setting for concerts, theatre and shows. A large kitchen staffed with professional cooks can feed the entire student population, which is over 1600.

In 1993, Mr. John Kuzbik was appointed Principal and is assisted by three Vice-Principals, Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Clarke and Mr. Harrison, along with over one hundred teachers, support staff, clerical and maintenance personnel. In the end, it is student achievements that speak well for Carlton and its multicultural student body makes this school an exiting and rewarding part of the Prince Albert lifestyle.
