SASKATCHEWAN'S CRADLE OF EDUCATION
(For more articles on Woodland Istitute SIAST click )
While Prince Albert was still part of the North West Territories, Emmanuel College was established in 1879, became a chartered University in 1883, and made our City the birthplace of adult education in the province. But near-sighted politicians and educators, not seeing the benefits of a local university, forced Emmanuel College to move to Saskatoon in 1909, to be part of the new University of Saskatchewan.
Once established, the tradition of higher learning and adult education maintained strong roots in our city and has made a comeback in the last 27 years. Prince Albert was a pioneer in the Community College movement and in 1970 The Regional Community College Association became part of the provincial education system offering pre-employment programs, trades, university classes, short courses and interest classes.
Opening new horizons, Prince Albert was targeted as the location for a new technical institute and the Prince Albert Technical Institute (PATI) became a reality in 1984. Equipment, staff and existing programs such as Integrated Resource Management, Vocational Forestry, Truck and Heavy Equipment Operations as well as trade programs were transferred from other institutes.
Developing its own innovative programs, PATI offered courses in the areas of Chemical Dependency Worker, Corrections Worker, Business Administration, Applied Arts, Small Engine Repair and other areas, becoming the major resource base for outreach services to the north-central region of the province.
Leading the way once more, on September 11, 1986, adult education opportunities in Prince Albert were expanded with the opening of a new state-of-the-art facility. Renamed, The Northern Institute of Technology, NIT forged ahead by adopting a competency based learning model to ensure accessibility and flexibility. This CBE model again served to establish NIT and Prince Albert as vocational training leaders in the province and across Canada.
Adult education opportunities became much broader when four Saskatchewan technical institutes and urban community colleges amalgamated, giving birth to The Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology, SIAST Woodland Campus, in January 1988. The multi-centre adult educational training system united NIT, the P.A. Regional Community College and the Meadow Lake Vocational Training Centre.
Now by maintaining the programs of each organization, Woodland Campus delivers 25 certificate and 9 diploma programs to over 3,500 on and off-campus students, accommodating close to 1,000 university students, employing 250 staff and injecting more than 10 million dollars into the local economy each year. The institute was renamed Woodland Institute SIAST in 1992.
Don Couch, was appointed Principal in November 1993, of Woodland Institute SIAST. The Institute makes Prince Albert the education centre for north-central Saskatchewan, fulfilling its mission "to be an innovative, student/client centered organization providing quality life-long education and training."
Service Clubs and Associations:
KIWANIS CLUB INTERNATIONAL
Many think that the term "to express oneself" is a product of the new nineties generation. Think again. This is the translation of a word that has been around since 1915 in the USA and since 1916 in Canada. A word we are all familiar with, KIWANIS. This International organization encourages its members to express themselves in fellowship and service to youth, the elderly, the Community and the Nation. The Prince Albert Kiwanis Club, born in 1922, is one of the oldest service clubs in our City. The Kiwanis motto "We Build" is evident in Prince Albert. We can thank the local chapter for building and running homes for the aged (Mitchell Place), or for the handicapped (Ingoldsby Kiwanis Home) or creating the Miller Hill Kiwanis Park, while promoting higher business, professional and social standards in our community. If you are interested in joining the P.A. Kiwanis Club, contact Al Meyer 763-2637 or Frank Moore 763-6451.
