Health Centre Volunteers
(For more articles on the P. A. Co-operative Health Centre click )
What would the P.A. Co-operative Health Centre be today without volunteers?
It would be much less than what it is - a health care clinic which offers dentistry, a comprehensive health promotion and education program, a medical van accessible to all who need it, as well as a full-service medical clinic which is furnished with state-of-the-art medical equipment.
When the Health Centre was expanded in 1974, members and volunteers were a primary force behind the project. They loaned money for the construction of the Health Centre, and bought Savings Certificates which were to be redeemed with interest at a later date. The majority of these Savings Certificates have never been redeemed, but have been turned back to the Co-operative as donations.
In the early developmental stages of the Co-operative, a group of volunteers began what is fondly referred to as the "Pep Program". Mostly a social affair with coffee, cookies and good company, where each person would bring a guest. Perhaps an elderly person recently released from hospital, or someone who lived alone and needed an outing and company. The Pep Program volunteers provided moral support, comfort and physical activities for seniors.
Officially registered in 1978, the Co-operative Health Services Volunteers meet at the Health Centre whenever there is a need to discuss supporting a new program, buying needed equipment or developing strategies for raising funds. Since 1978, the Volunteers have raised almost $400,000. They purchased the vehicle and maintain the van service, which is used to provide free transportation to and from the Co-operative Health Centre. They provided funds to furnish and equip the dental clinic, and also purchased some of the most modern and technically advanced medical equipment for the Co-operative Health Centre. They have provided audiovisual equipment and funding for educational material and special programs. Fundraising activities include the annual Fall garage sale. In Summer, the walk-a-thon is a relaxed family outing with a Barbecue, prizes for costumes, and volunteers pushing wheelchairs. The Spring Pancake Breakfast is a nice way to meet old friends and make new ones. Other major funding sources are donations, memoriums and legacies.
But volunteers are not just fundraisers. All the staff at the Centre know whenever they need a hand with any project, a phone call is all it takes. Assisting with the mailing of the Newsletter, providing handmade articles for the showcase in the foyer, planning and working at the annual Children's Health Fair and many other projects are undertaken by volunteers. Now a younger group of volunteers have begun helping at the Health Centre. Students between the ages of 8 and 16 assist with the Membership Program.
Our Health Centre would not be the same without volunteers, and we thank you for all your support.
If you would like more information about our volunteer program, please call Ralph Hjertaas, Volunteer Program Chair at 922-2662 or call Denise Gareau at the Co-Operative Health Centre, 763-6464.
