Into their midst comes a policeman traveling on skis. He no sooner arrives than... murder!! To get to the murder's rationale of the murder pattern, the policeman probes the background of everyone present and rattles a lot of skeletons. Be prepared for another famous Agatha Christie switch finish! THE MOUSETRAP is the longest running play in the history of theatre; 47 years and still going strong in London's West End. • December: Ed Pas
Saskatoon Artist working in acrylic on wood (carved and painted)
Artist statement - The ongoing theme of my work involves encounters with metaphysical beings in metaphysical landscapes. The work comes from a meditational approach where the images take form of their own volition during drawing sessions. In these sessions I enter a trance-like state similar to the soul journeys experienced by shamans. The experience is of a secret meeting in the vague half-shadow area characterized by the penumbra.* My process is about depicting these meetings and mapping the territory of this place through the creation of evocative images. The beings who show themselves in my work are travelers, guardians, spirit animals and others who cross my path. When they appear, the beings become part of a very personal iconography which I have developed over a number of years. This iconography includes recurring images of water, celestial bodies, ancient buildings and other objects, artifacts, and manifestations of nature. Each image records a glimpse of a meeting, an experience, or perhaps a portrait of one of the inhabitants of the penumbral place. The subjects are precise yet vague, seem simultaneously ancient and futuristic, and can be interpreted on multiple levels. I have been fascinated with the medieval concept that art should be more than simply a depiction of the outside world as we see and feel it with our five senses that the true reality exists beyond the mundane. My work to date has been an attempt to create sacred objects which we can enjoy as part of our daily lives--objects which can help to transform our surroundings into areas of sacredness and contemplation.
---------- * penumbra: the partly lighted area surrounding the complete shadow of a body, as the moon, in full eclipse --- the less dark region surrounding the dark central area of a sunspot --- a vague, indefinite, or borderline area

  • Until January 2, 2000
    Images at the Edge
    by Marsha Kennedy
    Opening Reception: November 26 - 8:00pm
    Artist Slide Lecture at 9:00pm

Kennedy’s project layers images of dead birds and pieces of table ware with glass etchings of weeds common to the prairies. The layering creates and subverts a juxtaposition of domestic, private, human space with nature. In this pensive, reflective project, Kennedy invites the viewer to consider our relationship with nature. What price is nature paying for human "advancement"? How have we come to see ourselves as the arbiters of good and bad nature? Why do we regard some plants as weeds and not others? Do we know the birds who are sharing their habitat with us? Have we looked at them and felt their physical bodies? What do the human changes to the environment mean for our personal lives? For the birds’ habitat? The images are quiet, somber and powerful in the questions they raise.
